Details
Thorsmork is a beautiful nature reserve situated between three glaciers; Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull, surrounded by glacial rivers Markarfljót and Krossá. To get there you drive on rough mountain tracks and cross unbridged glacial rivers, unpassable by ordinary vehicles.
A regular bus drives to Seljalandsfoss where a special sightseeing SUV is waiting to make the rest of the tour. En route you will be able to see remnants of the 2010 volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajokull and even some of the ash from the 2011 Grimsvotn eruption is visible some places. At Gigjokull there used to be a spectacular glacial lagoon – it was swept away by the 2010 eruption.
Thorsmork is like an oasis in the midst of the barren landscape – trees, shrubs, heather, flowers and other plants along with moss and lichen are in abundance. Our final destination is by Hrunagil – where the lava flow from Eyjafjallajokull threatened the whole valley.
Whichever way you look the landscape is awsome and true lovers of nature find something to their liking. The most desireable feature of Thorsmork is the wonderful view all over, mountains, glaciers and glacial rivers. The valley has been an official nature reserve since 1924.
Lunch or refreshments are not available in Thorsmork. Those who join the tour have to bring along some food or buy some on one of the stops from Reykjavik to Seljalandsfoss.
Reykjavik Excursions also offers scheduled bus tours to Thorsmork. Accommodation is available – camping, in huts and in a guesthouse.
