112/112a Reykjavik - Skogar- Skaftafell
Many of the
attractions that Iceland has to offer are to be seen on route.
Highlights from Reykjavik include Seljalandsfoss waterfall where there
is an approx. 30 min. stop. Next stop for approx. 1 hour is the Skógar
area, where you can savour the splendours of Skógarfoss waterfall and
visit the unique folk museum Skógasafn. Onwards to the village Vík,
surrounded by beautiful and impressive high bird cliffs and black sand
beaches. The Eldhraun lava fields, dating from 1783, are also a special
sight.
Kirkjubæjarklaustur village, which was known in
olden times as "Kirkjubær" (Church Farm) and was an important farming
estate and final destination is Skaftafell National Park. The
magnificent national park is one of Iceland’s most popular hiking and
mountain climbing regions with sights such as Svartifoss waterfall,
deep valleys, tall mountains, lush Arctic flora and the magical
atmosphere of Iceland's highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m).
Starting from Skaftafell the highlights are in reversed order.
