17/17a Reykjavik - Sprengisandur - Mývatn
We drive from Reykjavík via Selfoss and Hella, through the farmlands of Landssveit, around the foot of famous Mt. Hekla and into the uninhabited highlands until we reach Hrauneyjar hydro electrical power station where there is a hotel and a guesthouse as well as a highland travel service centrE. Continuing along the shore of Iceland's largest lake Þórisvatn, on the ancient Sprengisandur road, a much traveled path in former centuries. In Þjórsárver, by the glacier Hofsjökull, is the world's largest breeding ground of pink-footed geese. An stop is made in Nýidalur valley, beautiful hiking country at the foot of Tungnafellsjökull glacier. Sleeping bag accommodation is available in mountain huts. Onwards to civilisation in the Bárðardalur valley with a photo stop at the magnificent waterfall, Aldeyjarfoss. Short stop at Fosshóll service centre, located by spectacular waterfall Godafoss. We continue to Skútustaðir hamlet by lake Mývatn before arriving in Reykjahlíð. Starting from Mývatn the highlights are in reversed order.
This schedule is based on normal road and weather conditions.
Note that provisions should be brought along for Sprengisandur.
Bookings in advance are not necessary but we highly recommend to do so. In that case you can just show up at the bus stop – and don´t forget to bring along your booking confirmation.
