10 Hollywood films and 1 TV show

Was that Iceland you saw?

16/6/2017 Blog

In the past few years, it has become increasingly popular for film companies to come to Iceland to shoot films – especially if it is supposed to be far off country or an alien planet.

Hrossaborg: In the beginning of the film, Tom Cruise‘s character Jack lands in an abandoned baseball field to check out a dysfunctional robot.

Jarlhettur: A little later in the film, Jack waters a plant at the top of Jarlhettur and looks at the view.

Svínafellsjökull: Cooper, Brand and Romilly land on an icy planet, looking for their friend Mann who had landed there many years before.

Máfabót: Cooper, Brand and Doyle land on a watery planet, looking for Miller who had landed there any years before.

Waterfall-1598912Dettifoss waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe.

Dettifoss: In the beginning of the film, one Engineer drinks something and then breaks apart and falls into the waterfall.

Dómadalur: Quite a few of the outside takes on the alien planet they land on are shot here. For example when Elizabeth Shaw and her team drive in a jeep to and from the spaceship.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The home of Galen Eros, his wife, and daughter Jyn, was situated in Hafursey in South Iceland. The area is just under Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Katla volcano. The nearby area is virtually a sandy desert due to Katla‘s many eruptions.

Batman Begins

The scene where Bruce Wayne saves Ra‘s Al Ghul‘s live by sliding down a mountainside and manages just to catch him before he falls over the edge was shot in Sultartungnagil .

The League of Shadows was situated in the Himalaya mountains, but Svínafellsjökull glacier was used as a substitute. This is the place where Ra‘s Al Ghul becomes Bruce Wayne‘s master. The small village Wayne walks through on his way up the mountain was built by the parking lot to the set, and the entrance to the temple was closeby.

Die Another Day / A View to a Kill

The opening scene of View to a Kill was shot on Jökulsárlón lagoon and Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, substituting for Siberia. Jökulsárlón was again used for a spectacular car chase in Die Another Day.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The majority of the film was shot in Iceland, even the scenes that were supposed to happen in Greenland and Afghanistan. In few of the scenes in Iceland were very confusing for Icelanders and those who know the Icelandic geography. Walter Mitty travelled between places in a few minutes which should have taken a few hours and so on.  Locations used in the film were Stykkishólmur , Grundarfjörður , Garður , Hveradalir , Þjórsárbrú , Skógafoss , Breiðamerkursandur , Höfn in Hornafjörður , Seyðisfjörður and Geirabakarí in Borganes.

RE15_002--1-Reynisfjara, where Noah lived after the flood.

Noah was shot in quite a few locations in Iceland.

Hafursey (the same place Galen Eros and family lived): Noah built his ark here. He walks up to his grandfather Methuselah‘s cave.  The scenes with the ark, after the forest has grown, were shot in New York.

Reynisfjara : After the flood, Noah lives in a cave on the beach.

Raufarhólshellir : Methuselah‘s cave.

Fljótsdalshlíð : Adam and Eve's home was here.

Hamragarðaheiði: Noah‘s Ark strands in Hamragarðaheiði and he and his family settle there.

Captain America: Civil War

Shooting locations for the film were for example at Vík í Mýrdal . The location was doubling as Siberia, where the Winter Soldier was kept.

Justice League

The film has not premiered yet, so we do not know which scenes were shot in Iceland but we do know they were shot in Djúpavík in the Westfjords and that Jason Momoa and Ben Affleck were there amongst others. We also know quite a few Icelandic actors were used as extras.

Bonus: Game of Thrones

Iceland-1911930Þingvellir National Park.

Game of Thrones has been shot in various locations in South West, South and North East Iceland. Dimmuborgir, Kálfaströnd and Grjótagjá in Mývatn, Hvannagjá and Stekkjargjá in Þingvellir, Dyrafjöll , Þórufoss in Kjós, Vík in Höfðabrekkuheiði , Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng and Gjáin in Þjórsárdalur have all been used as locations in the famous TV show.

Iceland is one of the most volcanically active countries in the world. There are about 130 volcanos in Iceland, 30 of them are considered active, and 18 of those 30 have erupted since the year 900, with only a handful regularly erupting, like Hekla, Grímsvötn in Vatnajökull Glacier and Katla in Mýrdalsjökull Glacier.
