Six places to see in Iceland

February 27, 2019

As probably everyone knows, there are quite a few beautiful places to see in Iceland. However, it can be hard to find a place to start. If you want to look at something different to the Golden Circle, which we totally recommend and say everyone should visit, we have made a short list of beautiful places to see in Iceland.

Húsavík
This small village in North Iceland is one of the best places to go whale watching. The town has just over 2000 inhabitants and has a fantastic whale museum, where you can learn everything you can about those magnificent creatures of the ocean.

Húsavík is believed to be the place the first Norse man settled in 870.

Other places of worth seeing in the neighbourhood is the waterfall Dettifoss which is the most powerful waterfall in Europe and the beautiful Ásbyrgi canyon. The depression is shaped like a horseshoe, and legend says Óðinn's horse Sleipnir stepped down there. Mývatn lake is also nearby, with its beautiful pseudocraters and lava formations in Dimmuborgir. Together these four places are nicknamed the Diamond circle.

Hraunfossar
Waterfall-2068368_1920Beautiful Hraunfossar.
These beautiful series of waterfalls are in West Iceland. They span almost a kilometre in width, and the water runs into the waterfall from underneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field. It is quite the sight to see and is thought by many Icelanders to be Iceland's most beautiful waterfall.

Just a few metres away is Barnafoss (e. Children's waterfall). Not as beautiful as Hraunfossar but beautiful none the less. The more powerful waterfall got its name when two children, who wanted to follow their parents to church, fell into a natural stone bridge that covered the waterfall. After a curse their mother put on the bridge, where she vowed no one would be able to cross the bridge without falling into the waterfall, it collapsed.

Brúarhlöð
Between the village Flúðir and Gullfoss waterfall in South Iceland, you find Brúarhlöð. The Hvítá river has cut itself into the sedimentary agglomerate through the ages. The cliffs are surrounded by shrubbery, which makes the area with the different looking agglomerate and turquoise Hvítá quite spectacular to see.

Hvítserkur
In North-West Iceland, not far from the small town Blönduós, you can find the rock Hvítserkur. The name translates are White Caftan because of its white colour which comes from bird guano. It stands right on the shore and is quite a spectacular sight to see.

Gjáin
Gjáin, or The Ravine, is a canyon in Þjórsárdalur, a valley which many believe is the most beautiful in Iceland. Gjáin has beautiful basalt columns, and palagonite and the river Rauðá (Red River) runs through the ravine. The reconstructed farmstead Stöng, where a few scenes from Game of Thrones were shot, is situated not far away from Gjáin.

Hjálparfoss waterfall is also nearby as well as Hekla volcano.

Akranes
Only 40 minutes away from Reykjavík is the small village Akranes. The lovely village has coffee houses and restaurants for you to visit but it is also a great place to walk around in. There are a couple of flea markets that are open during the weekends, but the most beautiful area to visit are the two lighthouses on the peninsula.
