Visit all of Iceland's top destinations

The Highlights allows you to visit all of Iceland’s top destinations in at your own pace. You choose from one of five options for the duration of the passport with no limits on how often you travel back and forth. The passport is valid for most of the Iceland On Your Own routes in Iceland and provides you with 10% discount off the excluded ones.

The passport is aptly named as it provides access to some of Iceland’s most outstanding natural wonders. If you would like to see most of Iceland without making to strict plans, this is the perfect option. The passport is also ideal for those who prefer to spend time off the beaten track and perhaps enjoy a hike or two along the way. With the Highlights Passport you can travel back and forth within the time frame of 7, 9, 11, 13 or 15 days. Interesting places along the way include: Kjölur highland route, the birch forests at Þórsmörk nature reserve, the moss covered Laki craters, Skaftafell National Park, the icebergs floating in Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, the hiking paradise at Jökulsárgljúfur canyon and many more.

The passport connects to the north of Iceland across both Kjölur and Sprengisandur routes. Both of these routes run across Iceland’s central highlands and are only open during the height of summer. Sprengisandur is a route in between Landmannalaugar and Mývatn. The route runs between Tungnafellsjökull and Hofsjökull – a breathtaking journey with moon-like landscapes that go on forever. The Kjölur route leads you through a pass between the other side of Hofsjökull and Langjökull. The road takes you from Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall across isolated rugged wilderness to the north. Stops along the way include the oasis of Hveravellir and the magnificent Kerlingarfjöll area.

From Akureyri, in the north, you can connect with the natural wonders of the north-east. Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi and Krafla are all included in the passport, as well as Húsavík whale watching center. All along the south coast you will have the ability to connect with exciting mountain routes and see some amazing places such as Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and Skaftafell.

While you do not need to book each individual leg of the journey, please note that accommodations tend to get booked during the high season so it is good to book accommodations ahead of time. Guesthouses and Hostels are found along the way and many hotels suitable for different tastes. There are many good campsites along the way and there is usually plenty of space available.

The Highlights Passport is valid from 13 June to 7 September. Note that some routes start later or end earlier, please observe each individual schedule. Road and weather conditions might affect individual routes as well.
