Everything you always wanted to know about ISO 14001*
*But were afraid to ask

You might not be dying to learn all about some international standard called ISO 14001, but you should be because it’s a very important environmental standard that concerns us all. So, we’re going to tell you all about it and try not to be too boring while we’re at it. Also, we’re about to brag a bit.
The Dry Bit
ISO 14001 is an international standard for an effective environmental management system or EMS as they’re usually referred to. The standard specifies a framework of environmental requirements that organizations should follow. This includes everything from operational planning and control to monitoring, auditing and reviewing the EMS.
The Important Bit
The ISO 14001 is meant to provide a framework for an effective EMS, promoting enhancement of environmental performance, fulfilment of compliance obligations and achievement of environmental objectives. The EMS is essentially meant to promote sustainability, which in our opinion is the only acceptable way to run a business.
The Bragging Bit
To claim conformity with the standard, organizations must incorporate all the requirements of the standard in their EMS and fulfil them without exclusion. That’s a tall order but we’ve done just that and we’re very proud of our responsible and forward-thinking Environmental Policy. The short of it is that we consciously and continuously cut down our exhaust, educate and train our staff to reduce environmental impact, survey the company’s environmental performance and status and publish an annual report about the whole thing. We are essentially environmentally responsible. While we do hold the bragging rights to being the first Icelandic tour operator to be granted the ISO 14001 Certification for Environmental Management from the British Standard Institute (BSI), we are rooting for all our competitors to do the same. The travel industry’s responsibility to leave our environment just as we found it is matched only by its need to preserve this wonderful natural habitat.
Driven by Nature
Our core business is driving people around Iceland to show them what we love most about our own natural backyard. In the end we’re all visitors here, awestruck by the beauty of this wilderness we call home and as such we are obliged to treat it with the utmost respect. Driving our guests, we are first and foremost driven by nature.
