Embark on an unforgettable journey along Iceland’s scenic west coast with this two-day tour to the captivating Snæfellsnes Peninsula—often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its remarkable diversity of landscapes.
Dominating the region is the majestic Snæfellsjökull Glacier, a glacier-capped volcano that has stirred the human imagination for centuries. Most famously, it inspired Jules Verne’s classic novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. For those seeking a deeper connection to this mythical landscape, an optional guided tour (available for an additional fee) will take you into the 8,000-year-old Vatnshellir Lava Cave—an extraordinary descent into the Earth’s ancient volcanic core.
As you explore Snæfellsnes, you'll encounter dramatic cliffs and sea stacks, moss-covered lava fields, black sand beaches, and charming fishing villages steeped in local history. Scenic highlights include the striking Mount Kirkjufell—one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains—and the mysterious black pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur, scattered with smooth stones and twisted remnants of shipwrecks.
Your overnight stay will be in a cozy countryside hotel, ideally located away from city lights to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights in winter. While sightings can never be guaranteed, clear skies and favorable conditions may reward you with nature’s most magical light show: the aurora borealis dancing in vibrant colors across the Arctic sky.
Day 1:
Your adventure begins with pick-up from your selected location in Reykjavik at 9:30 a.m. Please note that the full pick-up process may take up to 30 minutes.
Your journey starts in the charming town of Borgarnes, rich in Viking heritage and history. From there, you’ll head to the striking basalt columns of Gerðuberg, a natural marvel of geometric perfection. Next, visit Ytri Tunga—a golden-sand beach famed for its friendly seal colonies and beautiful coastal scenery.
Continuing on, you'll explore the serene hamlet of Búðir, nestled within the dramatic landscapes of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Then it’s off to Arnarstapi, a quaint fishing village known for the impressive sea arch Gatklettur. Here, you’ll pause to enjoy a scenic and relaxing lunch break.
After lunch, descend into the depths of the 8,000-year-old Vatnshellir Lava Cave—an otherworldly underground formation that could have inspired Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. If you choose not to join the cave tour, you can instead visit the nearby Malarrif Visitor Center and lighthouse at no extra cost. If time permits, don’t miss the chance to admire the dramatic Lóndrangar cliffs rising from the sea.
The day continues with a stop at Djúpalónssandur, a black sand beach scattered with the wreckage of a 1948 shipwreck. Here, you can also try your hand at lifting the traditional “strength stones,” once used to test the might of local fishermen.
As the day winds down, you’ll check into your accommodation in Borgarnes (or a similar hotel) for a restful night. If you’re visiting between late September and early April, and conditions are right, you may be lucky enough to witness the dazzling Northern Lights—an unforgettable natural display that dances across the Arctic sky in vivid color.
Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll begin the day with a visit to the iconic Mount Kirkjufell—one of Iceland’s most photographed landmarks and a filming location for Game of Thrones. Nearby, a graceful waterfall completes this postcard-perfect scene, making it a must-stop for any nature lover or photography enthusiast.
Next, you’ll head to the nearby town of Grundarfjörður for a short break—an opportunity to grab snacks, stretch your legs, and refuel at the gas station before continuing your journey.
Your adventure then leads you to the stunning Hraunfossar waterfalls, where icy-clear streams flow from beneath ancient lava fields. Here, you’ll also enjoy a relaxing lunch while soaking in the peaceful surroundings.
The day’s historical highlight follows in Reykholt, once home to Snorri Sturluson—legendary historian, poet, and author of several Icelandic sagas. Walking through this cultural site offers a unique glimpse into Iceland’s rich medieval past.
From here, your journey offers two experiences to choose from:
Optional upgrade: For an additional fee, immerse yourself in the soothing geothermal waters of Krauma Spa, where hot water from Europe’s most powerful hot spring mixes with glacial meltwater for a truly rejuvenating soak—set against the spectacular backdrop of the Icelandic countryside.
Alternative option: If you prefer to skip the spa, you’ll visit Sturlureykir horse farm, where you can meet the friendly Icelandic horses and learn about the farm's innovative use of geothermal energy. This is followed by a visit to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe, where steaming water surges from the earth in a mesmerizing natural display.
Finally, you’ll make your way back to Reykjavik, with an estimated arrival time of around 6:05 p.m., bringing your unforgettable two-day adventure to a close.
