Get the best of both worlds just outside Reykjavík: a guided ATV ride across volcanic terrain, followed by a relaxing soak at Reykjaböð Hot Springs. Transfers link every part of the day, so there's no need for a rental car.

Off-road through the Hengill volcanic area

Your day starts at BSÍ Bus Terminal at 13:00 (optional pick-up from 12:30). Around 25 minutes later you arrive at Litla Kaffistofan, the ATV base on the edge of Hengill, an active volcanic system on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

After a safety briefing, your guide leads you on a 1.5-hour ride across lava fields and black sand trails, with views over the Hellisheiði plateau and the steaming Hveradalir geothermal valley. No previous experience is needed.

Warm up at Reykjaböð Hot Springs

At 15:30 you transfer to Reykjaböð in Hveragerði, at the entrance to Reykjadalur valley. Classic Admission gives you around two hours in the geothermal pools and the outdoor ritual area, where you can move between the event sauna, cold plunge and Kneipp pool. It's a smaller, quieter alternative to Iceland's larger lagoons.

Food along the way

Food isn't included, but you can buy snacks at Litla Kaffistofan, and Reykjaböð has a bistro and an in-water bar.

Back to Reykjavík

The return transfer leaves Reykjaböð at 18:30, getting you back to the city in the early evening.

FAQ

The ATV ride comes first. After 1.5 hours off-road in the Hengill volcanic area you transfer straight to Reykjaböð Hot Springs, so you can warm up and unwind in the geothermal water at the end of the day.
The minimum age for this tour is 10, because that is the minimum age at Reykjaböð Hot Springs. To drive an ATV you must be at least 17 and hold a full, valid driving licence. Anyone without one can ride as a passenger behind a licensed driver.
Food and drinks are not included, but you have two chances to eat. You can buy snacks at Litla Kaffistofan, the ATV base, and Reykjaböð has a bistro and an in-water bar, so you can have a proper meal or a drink while you relax after the ride.
About six hours. The tour leaves BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík at 13:00 (optional pick-up starts at 12:30), the ATV ride itself lasts 1.5 hours, and you get around two hours at Reykjaböð. The return transfer leaves Reykjaböð at 18:30, so you are back in Reykjavík in the early evening.

You need a full valid driving licence to drive an ATV in Iceland. Unfortunately, according to Icelandic law, a motorbike or tractor licence, or a provisional licence, will not be sufficient. You will also need to be at least 17 years of age.

Anyone that does not have a valid licence can still join an Iceland ATV tour, but you will have to be a passenger. You will not be able to drive.

Yes, you're allowed to bring a camera or GoPro to capture the stunning landscapes. However, keep in mind that you're responsible for securely attaching your equipment.

As part of all of our Iceland ATV tours, you’ll be provided with waterproof overalls, a balaclava and helmet, and waterproof boots if they’re required. However, you’ll need to come prepared with everything else you need to stay warm.

We recommend that you wear lots of warm layers, including a thermal base layer, a jumper or midlayer, and a warm jacket. While you won’t need a hat, warm socks and gloves can be a good idea.

No experience is needed. You need a valid driver’s license and will receive a safety briefing and guidance before the ride.
The ATV base at Litla Kaffistofan is only about 25 minutes from BSÍ Bus Terminal in downtown Reykjavík, making it one of the closest off-road experiences to the city.
